Get into logistics with Aspire Careers Foundation

Date Posted: 10/11/2011

The Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport's charitable careers foundation, Aspire, has helped seven young people develop the skills they need for a fulfilling job in logistics.

Working with The Prince's Trust's ‘Get into Logistics' programme, Aspire co-funded three weeks of intense training, delivered through the expertise of the site management team at leading logistics company Norbert Dentressangle's Thorncliffe Distribution Centre.

The three week programme included such essential skills as manual handling, equipment training, interview techniques, CV preparation, and meetings with recruitment agencies. The seven trainees also have a seasonal job at Norbert Dentressangle, the opportunity to undertake the CILT(UK) Level 2 Certificate in Logistics and Transport and enhanced long term job prospects, having been taken onto the books of recruitment agency Best Connections.

The ‘Get into Logistics' programme concluded with a celebration event at the site, where the trainees delivered a presentation on their experiences and received Prince's Trust Certificates.

Aspire's Donna Cresswell said at the presentation: ‘Aspire is all about encouraging a career in logistics. We believe passionately that a lack of funding should not harm the prospects of people starting out in our profession. This is an excellent example of three organisations [Norbert Dentressangle, Aspire and The Prince's Trust] working together to provide opportunities for young people. Logistics keeps the country moving and is an important career, and I very much hope the young people who have completed the programme will continue to develop in our industry.'

Norbert Dentressangle's Learning & Development Manager, Chris Dolby, added: ‘Congratulations to everyone, the young people on the ‘Get into Logistics' programme and the organisers and trainers. This is the start of a bigger ‘Get into Logistics' programme for Norbert Dentressangle. People are at the heart of Norbert Dentressangle so this initiative is very important to us. Thank you to Aspire for funding the programme, to The Prince's Trust, and to the Thorncliffe site team.'

The Aspire-unded trainees themselves were extremely pleased with the ‘Get into Logistics' programme. James Maycroft said: ‘It's been a great three weeks that got better and better. Thank you for the opportunity.' Kieran Chappell added: ‘My trainers told me all I needed to know. The ‘Get into Logistics' programme was a brilliant opportunity to get into employment.'
