FWD gives advice to Chancellor
Date Posted: 27/05/2010
In its submission to the new Chancellor the FWD urges the Government to:
- continue to look for ways to clamp down on alcohol duty fraud;
- not to increase VAT or extend it to food;
- consider the impact to businesses of future changes to National Insurance;
- avoid further raising fuel duty; and
- to take into account the significant work of FWD members on sustainability when considering extending environmental taxation.
FWD chief executive James Bielby said: “Despite the economic downturn, our sector has weathered the storm with a number of our members seeing sales growth. Sustaining this recovery will require policies that enable the wholesale sector to prosper and grow.
“We fully understand that in the current economic context the Government is facing a number of critical challenges. However, while reducing the budget deficit is a key priority, in this submission we argue that these demands need to be carefully balanced against creating an environment that fosters sustainable economic growth for FWD members.
“The Government should also focus on clear opportunities for revenue raising through ramping up efforts to combat alcohol and tobacco fraud which together is estimated to be costing the Exchequer in excess of £5bn a year."
